Holoportation: Virtual 3D Teleportation In Real-time (Microsoft Research)

holoportation is a new type of 3D capture technology that allows high quality 3D models of people to be reconstructed, compressed, and transmitted anywhere in the world in real-time. When combined with mixed reality displays such as HoloLens, this technology allows users to see and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they are actually present in their physical space. Communicating and interacting with remote users becomes as natural as face to face communication.

  1. Hi there! Gloria from StoYo Media, could we use this footage to produce a Facebook video please? We will credit you properly. Best, thanks!

  2. Just wait until tactile gloves appear. Then I will be able to touch that woman from porn.

  3. I want to ask is what technology and equipment to use?Mainly equipment! These things are existing, developers can implement?

  4. Very interesting. But it’s not clear what “Soju” (the guy who is being holoportated in the room of Mr Izadi in the video) can see. It seems like Mr. Izadi puts on his HoloLens and then can see Soju being in his room. But what does Soju see when he puts on his HoloLens? Can he see Mr. Izadi in his room or can he see Mr. Izadi’s room, so it feels like Soju is in a new (Mr. Izadi’s room). Any ideas?

  5. What you have shown here is a one-to-one conference. Is 3 way conference possible when all parties use hololens?

  6. Reminds me of Minority Report when he shows that it can all be recorded. That set up with all the 3D capture cameras must be expensive. I wonder if they will improve 3D capture to be inexpensive and easy to model, rig, texture, add polish as well as capture the animations. Only once 3D capture is inexpensive and improved greatly (Probably with machine learning), then you can have mainstream Holoporn as all the commenters wish.

  7. 02:10 That awakward monent when you realize that your daughter does not have a VR headset on and is talking to thin air.

  8. I had a dream about this about 3 years ago, soooo cool! 😀 The Oculus Rift is a huge help!

  9. I dig this. I just can’t see setting up all the capture devices like that. They need a simpler system for the 3D capture tech.

  10. You already live in a hologram and all you think of now is about pornography, you all make me sick.

  11. This IS the future of international business conferences… They need to better-utilise the resources, however, by creating “rental virtual offices”, like high-end internet cafes…

Finally, tech that could disrupt the international air-travel sector that is so harmful to the environment.

  12. the idea is great but will never get implemented mainstream unless they drastically find a way to develop the tech much cheaper as most people cant afford a hololens let alone the whole setup to make it work
